In Canada, it is customary to take one's shoes off when entering someone's house.
In the United States, it is customary to leave them on unless it is wet outside.
In Japan and China, it is customary to wear slippers in someone's house.

In Tunisia, it depends, if you want to show someone that you're hospital you insist that they leave their shoes on in all costs even if they are walking on high priced carpet, a nice guest will insist however to take his shoes off if he's afraid of messing off your carpet...
However if it's someone living in the house hold or real close person that you feel comfortable with you'll ask him to take of his shoes on carpets but leave it on elsewhere except if it's raining...

I used to see this customary when I was a little girl. But nowadays, I haven´t seen it. I guess in Brazil, maybe, it still happens in the countryside or small cities.
