From Mankad To Tactical Retire Out, Ashwin Is Destroying Cricket Stigmas One Rule At A Time

When the two in-form sides Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) took on each other at the Wankhede Stadium, everyone expected it to be a cracking encounter.

But we have seen many highly-anticipated encounters failing to live up to the hype but that was not the case during the RR vs LSG match.

As expected, the match swung from one corner to the other just like a see-saw which made it difficult to predict who would come out on the top and extend their winning run.

However, there was one game-changing moment that has become a talking point on the internet due to its novelty and the player associated with it.

There was a stage in the match where Sanju Samson’s side was on the back foot having lost a bunch of wickets in quick succession. This was when the franchise decided to send seasoned campaigner Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of a frontline batter Riyan Parag.

Not only did Ashwin hold the fort from one end but also made useful contributions with the bat, scoring some quick-fire runs. However, with only 10 balls left in their innings, the veteran off-spinner, in an unprecedented move, retired out and walked back to the pavilion, allowing Parag to take his spot in the middle.

This tactical move paid dividends as the youngster from Assam scored eight off four balls as RR finished with a competitive total of 165 for 6 on the board, which would eventually prove to be the match-winning score.

At the time, it was not known whether it was Ashwin’s decision or if he had consulted with the team management before going off the field. And the fans started praising the 35-year-old for another bold cricketing move which, despite being in the rules book, has rarely been used by the teams due to the fear of being called out for their sporting spirit.

Although this has happened in international and domestic cricket before, it was the first time a batter had sacrificed his wicket in this manner in the IPL history. Ashwin didn’t care whether he would be criticised for his action, he did what he thought was right for his side.

However, it was a surprise that, unlike the Jos Buttler run-out controversy, the majority of the people actually loved this tactical move by the team in Pink and hailed Ashwin for his brave decision.

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden who was inside the comm box at the time was mighty pleased as he saw Ashwin running towards the dressing room. “Fantastic move, absolutely brilliant,” he was heard saying on the mic.

Now that Ashwin has started this, don’t be surprised if more IPL teams use this tactical move to get an upper hand on their opposition.
